Ichthyosis (painful incurable skin disease)
With great sadness i see the upcoming breedings.....
Carriers of Ichthyosis a very
painful incurable skin disease which spreads like oil, 70% of the American Bulldogs
in the world are carriers (not visible) or sufferers (visible) and are used for breeding
with all its consequences because they give it to their offspring... (see diagram
below)
Breeders know it but breeding continues, the puppies with Ichthyosis be removed
from the litter and euthanised and the puppies with healthy skin should stay alive
...(are for sale)
The only thing that counts is money. Destroy a breed and puppies
suffering that's not important, it is really deeply sad, I have no words for it all!!!!
The following schedule is used:
Free x Free = 100% = free
Carrier x Free = 50% free, 50% carrier
Carrier x Carrier = 25% free, 50% Carrier, 25% Sufferer
Sufferer x Free = 100% carrier
Sufferer x Carrier = 50% Carrier, 50% Sufferer
Sufferer x Sufferer = 100% Sufferer
Ichthyosis is a hereditary disease (autosomal recessive) that the skin (and sometimes the eyes) in dogs affects. An incurable condition where there are clear thickening of the outer layer of the skin and feet visible is.Getroffen dogs have a rough skin covered with a thick layer of fat flakes or scales that stick to the skin and hair. This causes varying degrees of discomfort, pain and itching. From mild to very severe. It is incurable and it is difficult and time consuming to treat. Skin changes (decline) are usually irreversible. The determination of this skin condition can only be done by a biopsy, which is not always 100% inconclusive. Euthanasia is common, but milder forms may not be necessary.
Most affected breeds
Doberman Pinscher, Labador Retrievers, American Bulldogs, Irish
Setters, Rottweilers, Collies, English Springer Spaniels, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,
Terriers: West Highland White Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Norfolk Terrier and
Yorkshire Terrier
Symptoms:
1. All pups in this skin disease will be slightly different at birth.
(Belly dry and see what's what redder than normal)
2. Skin begins to crack and peel in approximately 2 to 6 weeks old.
(The problem manifests itself almost always at this age)
3. Because the scales adhere to the skin bacteria and yeasts to develop rapidly, giving the skin is often a strong odor and causes inflammation of the skin.
4. Tannish gray scales, which are thick and greasy, usually over the skin. (not always)
5. There is often a rough texture of the skin.
6. Large quantities of flaky debris on the skin surface.
7. Dry red patches.
8. Hard keratin deposits on legs, resulting in larger, heavier than legs than usual. (in severe cases) that are painful to walk
9. Lesions of the skin are more prominent in areas with less hair
Treatment
Because it can not be cured must be treated to reduce symptoms and discomfort to a minimum. Usually, your veterinarian a special shampoo to write (1x per week Sebomild P Virbac, to wipe off dander and slowing the accelerated production of the skin and according to need Malaseb shampoo by Virbac, to cure and / or prevention of yeast and bacteria, which Weather inflammation of the skin) After washing rinse with water, mixed with a little baby oil or moisturizing oil. The mode of inheritance is autosomal recessive:
This is the most common mode of inheritance for genetic diseases in dogs.
Carrier:

Sufferer:
To be affected (sufferer), the animal must inherit two copies of the gene, one from each parent. Both parents must therefore carry.
While the frequency of a gene for a recessive disorder remains low in the breed, the specific gene passed many generations before by chance 2 carriers are mated and sufferers are born. However, the gene frequency may become unusually high due to sustained proliferation and also unmarked eg the popular "Sire effect" when a father with a harmful recessive gene (carrier) has used for breeding, because of desirable properties.
Because the recessive gene is passed through population of normal outward healthy animals, it is very difficult to eradicate these properties , However, the numbers can be reduced by identifying the faulty gene carriers, through use of only tested dogs , affected dogs (sufferers), their parents (carriers), their siblings (suspect carriers) should not be bred long as they are not declared free
American Bulldogs can now be tested for Ichthyosis whether they are carriers of this dreadful genetic skin disease at University of Pennsylvania (USA)
